Do Taxis Have Baby Seats in Melbourne?

Do Babies Need a Car Seat in a Taxi in Victoria?
Yes. Under Victorian Road Rule 266, a child must be secured in an approved child restraint appropriate for their age and size in any motor vehicle, including taxis and commercial passenger vehicles.
The rules by age:
- Under 12 months: rear facing restraint required
- 12 months to under 4 years: rear facing or forward facing restraint required
- 4 years to under 7 years: forward facing restraint or booster seat required
- 7 years and above: a seatbelt applies if it fits the child correctly
Victoria does have a specific exemption that allows a child to travel without a restraint in a taxi if no restraint is available in that vehicle. This exemption exists for situations where a family takes an unplanned taxi and cannot install their own seat at the time.
Which Seat Does My Child Need?
Rear Facing Infant Seat
For newborns to approximately 12 months. Must face the rear. Suits children up to 9 kg, with some models extending to 12 kg.
Forward Facing Child Seat
For children from 12 months to approximately 4 years, or until they exceed the seat weight limit (typically 18 kg). Uses an internal harness.
Booster Seat
For children aged approximately 4 to 8 years, or from 18 kg until a standard seatbelt fits correctly (typically at 145 cm).

How to Book a Taxi with a Baby Seat in Melbourne
With Book Melbourne Taxi, a child seat is included in the standard fare at no extra charge. Here is how it works:

The seat does not change the fare. Your trip is priced on distance only. Use our fare estimator to check the price for your route before you book.
For peak time pickups we recommend booking a few hours in advance. For early morning airport runs, book the night before.
Airport Transfers with a Baby or Toddler
Airport transfers with baby seats are one of our most common bookings. Our airport transfer service quotes a fixed fare with all tolls included. A sedan from the CBD to Melbourne Airport (Tullamarine) with a child seat fitted is $65, the same price as without one.
For airport arrivals, we track your flight. Your 30 minutes of free waiting starts from when your plane actually lands, not the scheduled arrival time. That gives you time to collect bags, change the baby, and come through arrivals at your own pace. Your driver waits in the arrivals hall with a name board.
If you are travelling with a pram, travel cot, or multiple bags alongside a child seat, consider booking a maxi van. It has significantly more boot space and carries up to 11 passengers, which makes it practical for families with a lot of gear.
For departures with a baby, book the night before and include the seat details in your notes. The driver will arrive with the seat already fitted so you are not waiting at the kerb.
Bringing Your Own Child Seat
If you prefer to use your own seat, that is fine. Bring it with you and the driver will help with installation. Your seat must be an Australian standard restraint (AS/NZS 1754) and appropriate for your child's current age and weight.
If you are arriving at the airport with your own seat as checked luggage, let us know when booking. The driver will know to expect it and can help with installation at the pickup point.
